The Costal lake of Prile (Called Prelius by the Romans and flourishing already with the Etruscans), started to fill up during the XV century mostly because of the abuse done by its inhabitants breeding fishes and extracting salt therefore limiting the flow of the waters out of the lake. The lake quickly became a swamp. In 1737 the Lorena (Granduke of Tuscany) started a project to drain the lake. They began by trying to make the lake healty, then they started a slow process of filling the lake to build land for agriculture. The drainage was interrupted during the Reign of Italy during the second half of the 19th century and was then completed by the fascist government the following century in the 30s.

Of the Prile lake is left just a small portion, now protected by the Regional Park of the "diaccia botrona", an important environment for many migratory birds.
